Finding Clients as a Virtual Assistant

Plus, how I found my first client as a virtual assistant - and why I continue to work with them today.

The most common question I get from people that are looking into how to become a virtual assistant:

"But...how do I find clients?"

My answer to this is always the same: Finding clients as a virtual assistant is definitely a priority, but trying to answer this too early is like trying to run before you can walk. You need to have a lot of things in place first before you can start finding clients!
Step one: Get crystal clear on who you serve and why.

This is piece one of the puzzle. Once you know this, everything else will come easily.

Step two: Know what services you're offering and have your client experience mapped out.

You need to have something to offer your amazing new clients when they want to work with you!

Step three: Hang out where they hang out and interact with them authentically.

Build relationships and serve first.

If you follow this framework, clients will come. I'm proof! Here's the story of how I found my first client, and why I'm still working with them today:

I remember it so clearly. It was a weekday in May 2021, and my then nine month old son was contact napping. I had just started my business two weeks prior and I was focusing my efforts on building relationships on Instagram. A small business I followed posted about how her kids had been sick and the caption asked something like: "how much coffee is too much coffee?" Of course, because I'm me, I left a comment that said something like "the limit does not exist 😜"

She sent me a DM laughing at my comment, and that was the start of our relationship - interacting authentically in a shared space. We were chatting and found out we had a lot in common, and she needed some help in her business so she booked a discovery call!

The rest is history, and that business is still on my retainer client roster two and a half years later. Why? Because we are so aligned they are literally a dream to work for. We share the same values, expectations, and even sense of humour. If I could create my dream client avatar, it would literally be them.

So, to sum up: you find clients by being CLEAR on your audience, mission and vision and hanging out where they are. You find your DREAM clients by being yourself and showing up in a way that is authentic to your values and personality.
